You’ve all probably heard of Karina Pasian by now, right? The just-turned 17-year-old dominicana who’s got Quincy Jones for a godfather and had Diddy and Jay-Z fighting to sign her? Well if you haven’t, it’s time to give her a good listen. Raised in Washington Heights and co-managed by her father and hermano, Karina has the pipes–and an undeniable Future Star aura–that other aspiring R&B songstresses would kill for. She’s frequently compared to Alicia Keys because of piano-playing, R&B soloista skills (and let’s face it, her striking looks), but we’d rather let her songs, like the spright, mid-tempo single “Can’t Find the Words,” speak for themselves.

Karina is curently touring as the opening act for nerd-rapper extraordinaire Lupe Fiasco, and her debut album, First Love, drops everywhere August 19. Here’s your first look at the album cover…how cute is it? Very Brandy-meets-Ella Fitzgerald, who happen to be two of Karina’s biggest idols, and yet it totally reflects her teen spirit. We had a great conversation over lunch with Karina and her siblings yesterday, and we’ll be sharing that with you closer to the album. For now, suffice to say that this is one chica who deserves all the hype.

And though I loathe repeating myself, I have to tell you all about the magic that is Pantene Pro-V Expressions line. It is a set of shampoo and conditioners for color treated hair. They use new liquid crystal technology, and those liquid crystals are what help your strands to shine. I might sound like a commercial right now, but I brought the Blonde Expressions set home to try; ladies, I have not re-highlighted my brunette head in over 6 months and my dirty brown locks suddenly shone a bright blonde. It completely rejuvenated my color, and–most importantly–did not add an extra step to my routine. I think I’ll continue my lazy streak and skip the stylist for another month.

Hello my ladies! How are you all feeling? Fabulous, I hope. However, if you’re not I have the most fabulous pick-me-up. It comes in the form of a cream (or crème, if you’re fancy like that) blush: Face Stockholm Crème Blush in Rio ($23, facestockholm.com). It looks shockingly pink in its sleek silver case; the kind of pink that would send you running toward your nearest Clinique counter for a neutral girl-next-door antidote. But I swear, it’s totally wearable. On your skin it comes off a sheer, iridescent bubble gum. It has just the right amount of shine to give you a borderline disco glow, but not. Anyway, it’s gorgeous. Trust.

It’s starting to get annoying, but I can’t help it–it’s so freaking hot here in NYC! These 90-plus degree days have run amok on my body. Not only am I sleep deprived (who can sleep in this heat?) and completely fatigued, but I’m also sunburned. I know, I know; I preach the importance of sunscreen and then go and do a thing like this. But I swear it was an accident; on Saturday, I went to watch a charity softball tournament and simply forgot to pack the SPF. I am an idiot, and am paying the price. If any of you ladies are regretfully in the same position as I, steer clear of heavy, fragranced lotions and slather on pure aloe vera. If you find a brand with Lidocaine–a numbing agent–well, that’s a bonus. Stay cool, girls!

A decade is a long time. Think of how young you were a decade ago. Think of what you were wearing a decade ago. Yeah. Scary. But when we talk about Sephora–and the mecca it is to so many of us beauty junkies–a decade means 10 years of beautiful success. I remember the first time I stepped into the store, the overwhelming heady rush of bliss that swept over me as I realized the possibilities. I can play with all of this! I thought. And a dependency was born. One of the most beautiful things about the store is the freedom they allow their customers; yes, you can touch the blush and put on the lipgloss–before you buy it, and without the judgmental pressure of a sales clerk staring at you expectantly. I could go on, but my point is to tell all you addicts out there that the store will be celebrating its birthday with the brands they house; companies like Urban Decay, Bare Minerals, Too Faced, Stila and more will be coming out with commemorative, special addition kits for all us to enjoy. And believe me, I will enjoy. Feel pretty, chicas!

I hope you’re all enjoying your summers. I am mine, thank you. Except…okay, if I can be nit-picky here, I’m just not that into summer nail polish. The bright oranges, yellows, greens and pinks are all fabulous–I adore it when other chicas sport them confidently, prancing their vivid toes in fierce platform sandals. I’m just partial to fall shades: the burgundys, the purples, the blacks. Love how black took a chic turn last autumn, and love that I’m still going to wear it this coming one. And I found a surprising new favorite this afternoon: Wet n Wild’s Wild Shine nail color in Black Crème (wnwbeauty.com). The color is dark, but not goth; shiny, but not frosty or metallic. It’s just pitch perfect, thank you. And I can’t hardly wait for that first dark chill of fall.

It’s the sweetest thing I’ve seen in, oh, about a minute. Now chicas, it’s an anniversary special available only from mid-July through mid-August, so wrap your pretty little fingers around one soon!

I’m writing this blog post from a courthouse in New York City. Ay dios mio, you must be wondering why the hell I’m in here.

It all comes down to a bad break-up…with my former roommate. She’s taking me to court for an “illegal lockout”dispute. Forget the fact that home girl hasn’t lived in my apartment in over a year and is not even on the lease, she’s loca!

I’m scared in this court and I don’t really deserve to be in here, but sometimes life isn’t fair. I was good friends with my former roommate and now it’s turned into cold stares outside the courtroom and lawsuits.

I was raised never to hate anyone in my life. And even though this crazy beyatch is taking me to court-I still don’t hate her. It reminds me of when a guy you love turns out to be totally different than you ever thought and all of a sudden you see an awful side to him, but she was my friend, not a boyfriend.

I did once date this guy who was still living with his ex-girlfriend (which he never told me about)! He was also AWOL from the Army and of course, I didn’t receive this memo until much later either. Same guy told me I would never become a writer; that was when I knew it was time to end the relationship. He never bothered to return any of my vintage dresses, fancy lingerie, or beloved books even though I asked him several times.

[This is me after my last break-up. Sad, right?]

I’m going to sound like a hippie but I try to love everyone in my life. And it’s utterly disappointing when people let you down.

Do I have too much faith in humanity? Should I become less trusting of boyfriends, roommates and people in my life in general? I’m latina and I don’t ever want to be known as cold-hearted. Like the saying goes, “It is better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all,” right? Have you ever had an experience that made you lose faith in the people around you?

[Me, in better spirits.]
