The Smoothest Shampoo and Conditioner Ever!

Wednesday, April 30th, 2008

Chicas, remember the episode of Sex and the City when Carrie explains why she doesn’t like sleeping over her then-boyfriend Aidan’s house? It was “because he buys that two-in-one shampoo and uuugh.” Well, I share her shudder at the thought of using a two-in-one shampoo and conditioner. How many of them actually make a girl’s hair feel squeaky clean and super-moisturized? None I had tried, until a few weeks ago. I went on vacation with my boyfriend, and the hotel supplied what they had the nerve to call shampoo; I likened it to liquid hand soap. My boy very graciously ran to the neighboring grocery store, but to my dismay, he returned with a two-in-one shampoo. Reluctantly, I hopped in the shower…and emerged with the softest, softest head of hair I’ve ever had. Then I dried it, and it got even softer! It was like touching feathers. First thing I did when I returned home? Head for the nearest drugstore, empty my shower caddy and make room for Pantene’s Always Smooth 2-in-1 Shampoo Conditioner. Where had it been all my life?

GUESS Who’s Going Green?

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

Guess by Marciano is! Just in time for Earth Day, the legendary denim line has introduced GUESS GREEN, a line of eco-friendly pieces made from organic cotton. The collection for men and women will consist of jeans, tanks and t-shirts (click here to check out all the styles). Guess isn’t the only denim line using organic cotton–Levi’s, Loomstate and EDUN (founded by U2’s Bono and Gregory Rogan) are just a few that have gone the green route–but that doesn’t mean it’s just a passing trend! We should be doing our part to help save the planet little by little, and fashion is just one way to start. Let me know if you’ll be sporting eco-friendly items this summer and beyond.

Peace,

-Melissa

Sealed with a Promise

Tuesday, April 29th, 2008

I’m always impressed by stamps or seals of approval–for example, clothes in magazines that are A Steal! or supermarket food that’s Made Fresh Daily! Really, any kind of label excites me. Another one of my faves? Skin Cancer Foundation’s Seal of Recommendation. The sticker on which it reads is clear and blue, and I immediately want to buy any cosmetics or skincare product that carries it, because I know the product will help protect me from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Colorescience Sunforgettable Orb ($40, available starting in May at dermstore.com) has that seal. Inside its cute, orb-like packaging hides a mineral face powder that’s water resistant, lasts up to six hours and boasts SPF 30. That’s hot!

When Feeling Blue, Choose a New Hue

Monday, April 28th, 2008

I’m blue. Blah, blah, whatever…I don’t care. That kind of blue. No particular reason; I just am. It happens, right? So, what’s the beauty-obsessed girl to do when the downers strike? Play with a new shade of makeup, claro. And this time, I went for the bold: Green eyeshadow. I have to say, I’m normally not that adventurous of a gal to be messin’ with heavily pigmented shadows during the day. However, Estee Lauder’s Pure Color Eyeshadow in Sea Grass ($17.50, esteelauder.com) is actually a wearable shade of green. Light and iridescent, it blends beautifully and brightens my brown eyes–as well as my mood.

Someone Just Called Me Old!

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Sooo…I’ve been reading some of your fabulous comments on my blog posts. Chicas, thank you! You know I love reading the feedback you send me and the tips you give one another. We’ve created our own beauty community—how cool is that? How-ev-ah (cue the scary music), I recently stumbled upon one reader posting that insinuated—no, outright called me…old. You read that right. At a mere 28 years, I’m old! I’m not gonna front, that hurt—mainly because I’ve been thinking the same thing. The other day, I smiled in the mirror, and there appeared tiny lines around my eyes. You know what they looked like? Crow’s feet! (Literally, like little bird’s feet.) I’ve since begun a mad search for the best anti-puffing, de-wrinkling, lightening eye creams out there. For now, I’m smothering my skin with Benefit’s Erase Paste ($26, benefitcosmetics.com), a brightening cream that also conceals (it got props in our first-ever Pretty Damn Glam beauty awards, revealed in our May issue, out now!) Ladies, please help me! Write, respond, tell me which eye creams you love and I’ll check them out. Gracias!

Day 5 - That Heated Eyelash Curler You’ve Been Asking About…

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

Today is the fifth and final day of All About Eyes Week, and I want to end by answering a very popular question you readers have been asking me: Where can I get that heated eyelash curler you blogged about? Well, first, I hear you ladies! I read all those comments you leave me, and I’m thrilled to be able to tell you more. The heated eyelash curler I love was a gift from a makeup artist. It’s teeny-tiny, doesn’t clamp your lashes in that scary way most curlers do, and heats up in about ten seconds. It’s the Japonesque Heated Mini Eyelash Curler, and you can find it on japonesque.com.

Keep writing, chicas!

Day 4 - Liquid Liner Notes

Wednesday, April 23rd, 2008

A tip about liquid eyeliner, ladies: Practice makes perfect. I find that the best way to apply it is to start about a quarter of the way out from your inner eye corner, then boldly sweep out to the ends. Just…hold your breath and do it! Then do it again, every morning, for, oh…about a month. That’s how long it took me to get it down! I’ve received tidbits of advice on this from various makeup artists, and here’s a good one: You don’t have to draw a perfect line; you can make short dashes, connecting them until you reach the outer corner. Or, try making dots in between your lashes, going at them from underneath. My favorite black liquid liner right now is by Kat Von D for Sephora ($16, coming soon to sephora.com). The black liquid comes in two textures: matte and shimmering. Happy practicing!

Day 3 - High Brow Society

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Hola chicas! It’s day three of our “All About Eyes” week here at Color Me Glam. Today I’m going to take you back–way back. Back to when I was but a tot; a blossoming teenager obsessed with Bibi Gaytan’s eyebrows. (Ladies, please, tell me you remember who Bibi Gaytan was! I say ‘was’ because after a few telenovelas, a marriage to frequent co-star Eduardo Capetillo and a few babies later, she kinda dropped off the face of the earth). The singer-slash-soap-star had the most beautifully arched eyebrows I had ever seen, and I wanted them. I still want them! So I go to waxers, threaders, brow shapers and always ask for a severe, deliberate arch in each brow, then I highlight underneath them with Benefit’s High Brow ($20, benefitcosmetics.com), a highlighting pencil that exaggerates my arches even more. But they’ll never be like hers. Es como alcanzar una estrella. Sigh.

Day 2 - Good-For-You Mascara

Monday, April 21st, 2008

A few days ago, I had a bad experience with waterproof mascara. I actually hate the stuff. My lashes feel 10 pounds heavier and crispier than over-gelled curls. Also, it stings and is a b*tch to take off! Anyway, the day after I decide to try some, I found myself still removing black ink from my lashes and desperately searching the bottomless makeup bins in our beauty closet for a feel-good solution. Enter Neutrogena Healthy Volume mascara ($6.99, available at drugstores). It boasts 400 percent fuller lashes and “healthy” natural ingredients like olive and almond oil. Truth: I didn’t think it volumized so much as lengthened and separated. Pretty results, with the added bonus of feeling light and soothing on my lashes. Aaahhh.

All About Eyes! Day 1 - Primed and Ready

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Hola, chicas! I’m so excited to begin the first of many themed weeks here at Color Me Glam! This first one is devoted to your eyes. Your peepers will be sitting pretty after these genius products and cool little tips. So, let’s begin with a discussion on primers. (Bored? Hang with me.) My loyal readers know I am damn lazy; an extra step in my makeup routine is as necessary as 5-inch heels on a gravel walkway. But, I have a colleague here who swears by Urban Decay’s Eyeshadow Primer Potion ($16, urbandecay.com). The only time I think about using a primer is when I’m wearing liquid eye shadow, which has a wicked bad habit of creasing. If you have oily skin, the problem is worse. This primer promises to keep shadow in place–and it actually does. After such stellar word of mouth, I had to try it. Smooth, ladies. Very smooth.
