Pretty Little Controversy: L’Oreal and Beyonce
Okay, let me start by saying that I don’t have any inside scoop here. But I, like many of you readers I’m sure, have seen the L’Oreal Feria advertisement that’s come under fire due to recent accusations that its starring spokeswoman, Beyonce, appears ‘whiter’ and her nose ‘pointier.’ So basically I want to know: What do we all think here? Was there an effort to make our Dreamgirl look “whiter,” or is this just a bunch of unnecessary drama-dramz? Thoughts, por favor.

My personal opinion is that maybe B’s complexion was altered just a tad bit to make her more marketable. This is nothing new ladies… L’Oreal attracts a clientele from all over the world, therefore having to play it safe…
They want to show consumers that they embrace “Black Women” by showing diversity, but not to a level where they celebrate the features and attributes that make women of color so beautiful.
Yes of course… I take into consideration that Beyonce is not a dark skin women, but she is also not that fair in skin, or her hair naturally that blonde, like she is depicted in this advertisement.
It’s just unfortunate when we women of color whether african american or latino or any other ethnicity have to alter or change who we are to meet the demands of the status quo!!!
Think about it???
Yes Beyonce is made whiter for this advertisement and nose pointer. Not good she should be proud of who she is.
Yeah, i think so i noticed it off rip. Its the same thing with rihanna.
I doubt Beyonce had anything to do with it. She gets paid a lot of money for the use of her image and it’s not likely she has approval of advertisements before they go out. It may be the lighting, but they should light her in a way that reflects her true skin color. And her nose sure doesn’t look like that in videos. This may have been the work of an overzealous art director, but someone approved this image. I’m not sure why anyone thought we wouldn’t notice. And worse, why they thought non-women of color would rather see a manipulated image of Beyonce rather than what she truly looks like. The girls has sold millions of records, EVERYONE knows what she looks like!
OMG the alterations are so obvious it makes me want to puke! I’m disgusted they’d think making her appear “whiter;” whatever that means; was going to make the ad any more attractive. Her “ethnic” looks are what makes her so beautiful, and in that add they tried to strip her of that…
I do not appreciate this at all. I am have a caramel complexion, curly hair and dark eyes. I grew up in Venezuela, bombarded with images of tall, white, blonde haired and blue eyed women. I was told that was real beauty. I played with Barbies that had unrealistic proportions and looked nothing like me. I heard - and I still do - that the lighter you are the more attractive you are. I am still trying to work out my issues and trying to get the idea out of my head that in order to be attractive, you need to have straight hair and light skin.
Beauty comes on all shapes, sizes and COLORS.
Beyonce is a beautiful woman. Her African American features should not be altered. This sends the same message I received growing up to all the little girls that admire her.
She definately looks “lighter”, there’s no doubt about it.
Hmmm… Beyonce has a lot of different looks - she goes from kinky afro to long curly locks to updo’s - she’s been blonde since forever and she’s had it straight - she’s looked fair many times this photo just accentuates both the hair and the skin tone…. girlfriends! we know she is not white - it’s just a different step in her fashion - but I wouldn’t doubt she’ll look more “brown” in her next photos!
She does look lighter and her nose does look different. That’s really sad, because I myself have a medium complexion, and my daughter is actually a little darker and I want her to embrace herself the way she is not the way the media thinks looks better. What are supposed to tell our girls? And boys?
Oh for heaven’s sake!Ladies no matter what we think about it.Lets face it they do it with almost all models.Let us not act surprised.Right or wrong it’s done everyday.
Wow, its amazing how much lighter she looks!!!
And yes, her nose does look much pointier.. Being a latina, i have the traditional latina characteristics (the big nose! and the big lips and i am a caramel tan color. I wouldnt change them for nothing. I understand that they are promoting the color and yes that color compliments a lighter skin tone, but if using beyonce, pick another color that will look good with her natural skin color, dont lighten her and change her race just because you feel that it will strengthen your sales and advertisement.
It can be taken 2 ways.
1. Degrading to Black women- almost stating that society views “white” as beautiful. It looks bad on Beyonce and questions her strength and self conf. in being a beautiful AFRICAN-AMERICAN woman. Because we all know that she is of a darker complection.. not mixed.. and certainly not lighter
2. Loreal can be sending out a negative message towards our society and what is “beautiful” and what is not.
It’s so clear she looks whiter. It was a touch up on the photo or did they paint her like those guys from the Movie “White Chicks”…hehehe
i have to say yes i see the difference, and i ca not seem to understand why this fake face. i don’t like when things like these happen. i mean why she is beautiful already. i hate how still there is a thing with the color of ones skin and i am white.
She does look whiter but so what. Don’t they bronze white models? I don’t care how they want to color their models but really if they want a whiter or darker girl why don’t they just get one. And who in the heck cares if they are whiter or darker anyway. Just get over it.
It’s terrible. She does not look ethnic at all. This is the wrong message to send to teens & young women today especially when almost half (if not more) of our US society is comprised of different races & ethnicities. What, are their looks not up to “model standard’?
Shame on Loreal for making Beyonce look like a white cheerleader type.
ola, some people need to find more to do with their time she’s made up and maybe aired brushed, but why lighter and I think that’s her nose but maybe it looks different due to the angle her face is on. Have a nice day
Yes she is lighter; however; all magazines are “airbrushed”. Nobody looks like they look in the magazines. They look exactly like us “chicas”.
Angela
I actually do airbrushing + the artist made her look yellow. In the end someone w/Beyonce’s clout has final say on how she is presented in the media, case closed. If she allowed the make-up artist to do this to her and refused to speak up as a woman of color only she is to blame. Also, she being who she is, has final say regarding lighting, + digital photo-retouching. She needs to wake up.
