Summer Jams: DJ Camilo’s Ultimate Playlist
Every summer needs a hot soundtrack to match. And whether you spend those sweltering days grilling up fritas with family in the backyard or lounging beachside with friends, the choice of beats is essential. I called up DJ Camilo, who every Sunday spins of-the-moment tracks on Lights Out (the first Latin show on NYC hip-hop radio station Hot 97), to get his recommendations for the ultimate summer playlist. The Queens-bred audiophile had much to share–”Every night I play at nightclubs, I touch most of these,” he says–from oldies to goodies to a new record from one of his personal favorites. Enjoy:
DJ CAMILO’S ULTIMATE SUMMER PLAYLIST
1. Arcangel, “‘Pa Que La Pases Bien” - “It’s still new to most people, but since reggaeton took a big fall recently, this is probably the next record that’s gonna ring off. Along with Jowell & Randy, I would say Arcangel is one of my favorites out of the new reggaeton guys to come out.”
2. Danity Kane, “Damaged” - “One of the biggest records on the dance floor right now. No matter what type of crowd I play it for–Latin, white, Asian, black–it always jumps off.”
3. Lil Wayne, “Lollipop” - He’s the biggest rapper right now–what more can I say? I think he almost went gold with his new album on the first day it came out. Nowadays, with record sales being garbage, that’s huge.”
4. Kat DeLuna, “Run the Show” - “I had to put my sister up in there, ‘cuz she be reppin’ hard. She’s Dominican from Jersey, and the record is growing. I had her perform last week for [MTV Tr3s VJ] L Boogs’ birthday party at Spotlight. She’s real cool people.”
5. David Guetta, “Love Is Gone” - “You know this song. It stars out like [sings], ‘Now that the looooove iiiiiis gooooone,’ and then it comes in with a crazy beat. House music came back real big this year, so I had to add this in to change it up.”
6. Maino, “Hi Haters” - “This is the biggest record by a New York hip-hop artist right now. Another one that’s active with every kind of crowd. Catchy record. Funny.”
7. The-Dream, “I Luv Your Girl” - “Another banger. It’s R&B, and it’s just funny. Talking ’bout how he loves your girl…that’s crazy.”
8. Casa de Leones, “No Te Veo” - “This one’s not that new, but it’s still very powerful. Jowell and Randy are the big new guys right now.”
9. Wisin y Yandel, “Sexy Movimiento” - “It’s a must–kind of like a ‘Lollipop’ for the reggaeton world.”
10. Juganot, “Bad Girl” - “This is my rapper–he’s Puerto Rican, originally from the Bronx. I met him about 12 years ago, and he’s just ill, man. Does his own beats. We’re getting a good reaction with this record in Miami and New York.
