Femme Fatale, circa 2008
I’m loving the new Eva Mendes posters for the Frank Miller-directed superhero flick The Spirit, especially this close-up, in which she looks a bit like Ava Gardner, at about the time the classic Hollywood beauty starred in The Killers (1946). That seems to fit, since more and more, Eva playing up her risque side—ie. her nude PETA ad, semi-nude pics in Flaunt and Italian Vogue and her television ad for Calvin Klein’s Secret Obsession, which was banned in the States for its nipple flash. But is she also starting to position herself as an onscreen femme fatale in the film noirish mold, a temptress who can drive a dude to do some crazy stuff, or is bad to the bone?
It seems that way…We’ve already seen her go from being the cute love interest (Hitch, Ghost Rider) to being the object of intense desire in We Own the Night (though there, she was a force for good, unlike classic femme fatales). Now, she’ll turn up the heat in the The Women (out Sept. 12), in which she’ll flat-out play a homewrecker, and in The Spirit (out at Christmas), in which she’ll play Sand Saref, former girl next door to Spirit alter ego Denny Colt who embraces evil and tries to lure the Spirit along. The tagline says it all: “Do I look like a good girl?”
