Cameron Diaz, who earned a reported $30 million for her work in Shrek 3, thanks to a savvy backend deal, would probably flip me off and laugh all the way to the bank for saying this, but her career is in the crapper. Exhibit A is the weak $20 million opening take for the slomewhat amusing What Happens in Vegas, and the fact that she’s been reduced to playing opposite Ashton Kutcher in yet another rom-com. She’s way too old for that sh*t and it’s beginning to show. Exhibit B is the fact that, Shrek aside, her biggest box office hit is still 1998’s There’s Somethng About Mary. Then again it looks like Cameron is just as aware that her career needs a next step. A couple of upcoming movies look like Oscar bait (the courtroom drama My Sister’s Keeper, and suburban morality drama The Box), but I’m most hopeful about Old Acquaintances, the story of two female frienemies that co-stars Cameron’s buddy Drew Barrymore and will be a remake of a Betty Davis movie of the same name. Remaking Betty Davis is gutsy. Aim high, I say.
