Scared Straight, the Mexican way
When they’re not directing really good movies or planning their takeover of Hollywood, Mexican directors Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu and Alfonso Cuaron direct anti-drug PSAs and politically incendiary short films that will make your freaking hair stand on end.
The latest: Iñarritu directed three 30-second TV ads for The Meth Project, a non-profit trying to reduce first-time meth use. The ads, each highly disturbing, feature kids prostituting themselves, robbing a family and ignoring an overdosing friend and have the gritty, moddy look Iñarritu perfected in Amores Perros and 21 Grams. Check them out here.
A few months back, Cuaron hooked up with writer Naomi Klein to make a short film based on her book, The Shock Doctrine, which argues that historically, people were in shock from wars, natural disasters and bad economic situations, governments and big corporations have taken advantage by passing policies that we would never have allowed in more peaceful times (hello Patriot Act and Shell and BP’s imminent takeover of Iraqi oil). Cuaron uses a propaganda film look an the result is effectively creepy. Check it out here. Sleep well!
