The Coen Brothers are Officially Mainstream

After delivering their biggest box office success with No Country for Old Men, the Coen brothers will finally have a movie open in wide release. Burn After Reading, a comedy starring George Clooney, Brad Pitt, John Malkovich and Tilda Swinton, comes out Sept. 26. That news may have been expected after No Country won the Best Picture Oscar and kudos to them, but it was still kinda weird to me. The iconoclastic bros, whose brutal No Country has made $68 million in three months, as the main event in multiplex-land, where the inane 27 Dresses made $75 million in half that time? Hmm, I don’t know. That strategy will probably work with Burn, which has two huge stars, but not sure about wide release as a permanent strategy for the Coens. Can they really win over masses of people without compromising their off-kilter aesthetic?
