Nelly Furtado: “I Feel Latina”
Nelly Furtado has always been known for her love of all things Latin–the pop star’s rumored to be pregnant by her Cuban sound engineer boyfriend Demacio Castellon, and she’s also been singing in Spanish and Portugese since the early days of her career–but now Nelly is taking that passion to the next level. “I definitely feel Hispanic,” the singer told Chilean newspaper “El Mercurio” earlier this week. “I feel Latina.” The singer is overseas to perform for music-loving chilenos at the Viña del Mar International Music Festival, which kicks off tonight and lasts for a whopping 5 days. She’ll open the Saturday night show, and other top acts performing through the weekend include vets like Peter Frampton and Earth, Wind and Fire and current stars like Wisin & Yandel and Calle 13.
Back to Nelly, though: her latinidad has always been the subject of heated debate in our office–we even rated her on a Latin-O-Meter a few months back–but with her recent sexy collabs with Juanes (on the sensual duet “Te Busque”) and the aforementioned Calle 13 (on the bootyshaking “No Hay Igual” remix), it’s getting harder and harder to hate on this diva’s cultural persuasions. If Nelly feels Latina, is that good enough? Dime what you think.
