Please Don’t Suck, Grammys!

grammy210.jpgWe all know how crappy the movie award shows have been this year, but lest anyone forget, the music industry is also in critical condition–and it’s not even on strike! This year’s Grammys won’t have the celebratory air of years past, as sales continue to plummet and stars like Amy Winehouse have pesky rehab stints and rejected visas to contend with before they can even think of going to LA pick up a trophy. Still, last year’s Grammy show had a couple of saving grace moments (an amazingly over-the-top Christina Aguilera tribute to James Brown, for one), and with luck, this year’s show will, too. Here are five reasons to believe that the Grammys won’t suck in ‘08:

  1. Beyonce and Tina Turner. Together. The super-divas of Grammy present and past are teaming up for what’s sure to be a monster duet performance. We don’t know what they’ll be singing, but you can be damn sure that they will both wear blindingly metallic outfits and tear up the stage until the whole audience collapses in projected exhaustion.
  2. The always-imminent Kanye West breakdown. If Amy Winehouse beats out Yeezy for Album of the Year…OMG.
  3. Shakira could win a major award. Shaki is up for Best Pop Collaboration for the Beyonce-assisted “Beautiful Liar,” and if she beats out Justin Timberlake/Nelly Furtado and Gwen Stefani/Akon, it would be a major coup. Plus, what if Juanes, already a confirmed presenter, passed her the trophy himself? Heaven.
  4. Corrine Bailey Rae is not performing. Better yet, no one even cares about her anymore. I called her downfall ages ago. Bwahahaha!
  5. Latinos will be there. Even if they don’t make it to our TV screens, we know that tons of amazing Latin artists are up for awards–Panda, Akwid, Jorge Drexler and Jarabe de Palo, just to name a few–and Sergio Gomez of K-Paz de La Sierra might even pick up a posthumous Grammy for Best Banda Album. Now that’s reason to celebrate.
