The other day, I was leafing through a magazine and noticed a double page ad for Heroes promoting next week’s episode. Given “Heroes’” recent fall in the ratings, it seemed like NBC was practically begging fans–who after a stellar first season, have suffered through a frustrating second so far–to please come back. On the ad was every one you cared about from the first season, and tellingly, not one new character from the second season.  On last night’s action-packed episode, an improvement over recent weeks, looked more like the good old days (sorry Dominican Twins, but your storyline is just not cutting it): Peter is back on American soil, but with a twist: he inadvertantly sends himself and his Irish lass to a future New York, in which the virus has killed off a sky-high pile of people. This, we hope, will fully jog his memory and help him use his powers. Back at the company, Suresh, Parkman and Nikki battle Parkman’s dad, and Parkman nails him by expanding his own powers from merely reading people’s thoughts. Asked by Bob to off Mr. Bennet, Suresh spills the beans about his and Bennet’s plan to bring down the Company, thus returning his old waffly self. This guy has the backbone of a jellyfish and is a walking argument for human evolution if there ever was one. Nikki inexplicably injects herself with the virus.

Meanwhile, West finds out that Mr. Bennet is “the man with the horn-rimmed glasses” (as if teenagers actually talked like that) who abducted him and flies away before Claire can explain. Mr. Bennet, hoping to save his family and avoid a bullet in the eye as presaged by one of Isaac’s prophetic paintings, wants the family to pack up, pronto. Hiro finally wraps up that dull medieval Japan storyline by blowing up a lot of guns and breaking a girl’s heart, and killing Kensei. He comes back to his own time, only to have Ando tell him his Dad’s dead. Welcome back! Oh yeah, and because we didn’t get enough of David Anders’ weak acting as Takezo Kensei, we find out he is also Adam, the present-day baddie going around killing everyone involved in the Company.

Will Nikki and Mr. Bennet survive? We probably won’t find out next week. That episode, as that ad I mentioned and promo spots promise, will be dedicated to filling in the gaps between last season’s finale and the start of this season (ie. how did Peter survive being a human bomb? How did Sylar survive getting run through by Hiro’s sword? How did Peter meet Adam?).
