Speaking of made up Latin names…
Somebody at HBO Latino (which we admit we never watch) had the brilliant idea of showcasing Latin culture by simply having tell their own stories and anecdotes in front of a camera. The result? Habla and Habla Mas, showing through Saturday on HBO on Demand, in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month. Far from being earnest or deadly dull, most of the stories are really funny, poignant and insightful. One girl explains how she and her cousins got names like Novoa, Oscariris and Coraliz Danay; there’s a colombiano who laughs about being suspected of being a drug mule every time he goes to the airport—and figures it’ll probably happen when he tries to get into heaven; and there’s a china brazileña who details the hilarious kind of trouble she got herself in when she mispronounced “correr” as “coger” in front of a male Mexican colleague. Good stuff.

Habla was conceived and directed by Venezuelan film maker Trina Bardusco, who was featured in Latina a few years ago (pretty sure she still is in charge of it, although she now produces the V-Me’s nightly talk show Viva Voz.) An awesome, fearless, creative latina!
