Live long and prosper, Zoe
So, after years of not knowing what to do with a dark-skinned Latina with potential, it seems like Hollywood finally just decided to shove Zoe Saldana into outer space. Not only has the Dominican actress started shooting James Cameron’s $200 million 3-D extravaganza, Avatar, but she just signed on to do a new Star Trek movie (J.J. Abrams, of Alias and Lost, will direct). I’m totally psyched that Zoe Saldana has turned into a sci-fi princess virtually overnight, since out of the hundreds and hundreds of sci-fi movies and TV shows ever made, Latinos are in like five. It was as if we’d been written right out of the future. This, at least, proves that they can’t get rid of us all. Those of you with crazy made up Latin names like Yamilet or Madisleydis have another reason to rejoice: Zoe plays characters named Neytiri and Uhura. Represent!
